Meghan's Bridal Shower

My best friend and cousin is getting married!

We threw her a shower in the backyard, which actually worked out even though I was terrified it would rain. I've been seeing these typography balloons all over Pinterest and wanted to get one for it. I was sad because I guess you can't fill them with helium.. boo, so I just placed mine in front of the food table. The Zurchers lady wouldn't even try, trust me I tried. haha I told her I'd pay for the helium and everything and she was like nope, nope, nope.

How amazing are these watermelon napkins from Oh Happy Day? Their entire shop is full of party supply gold.

For food, we had a "mini food" bar with mini ham and cheese sandwiches, caprese on a stick, fruit salad, and veggies.

For dessert- miniature donuts, scones and lemon cookies. The mini donuts are from AnchorBakery on Etsy and apparently they have a real life shop in Anaheim, CA so that's definitely going to happen someday now. The mini scones are from MadeByMamaBCaramels on Etsy. My mom made the cookies.

I loved the invites from Minted. This isn't a sponsored post (though Minted, hit a sister up!) but I was so impressed with them because they did free address labeling. I have bad handwriting so I was excited about that.

Meghan and I have had lots of adventures over the years so I wanted to display some of our pictures. I invited guests to bring pics too but that was kind of an #epicfail, haha so it ended up just being the Meghan and Haylee show. Fine by us! Hopefully people didn't mind.

The cute bride! We played the interview game so lots of gum chewing went down.

Love this girl. I'm seriously so grateful to her. She has been the greatest friend and support over the years and I can't think of anyone who deserves to be happy more than she does. I'll be sad to "let her go" but I couldn't be more excited for her. They're a really cute couple too!

And one more for good measure, because my niece is the cutest thing ever.

Sewn : Button Down Midi Dress

After seeing this gorgeous dress on Sandra Semburg's blog, I wanted to recreate a similar one. I tried to find similar fabric but I could not for the life of me find any. Seriously I tried, for some reason I had the hardest time. There's lots of ivory satin fabric. There's lots of printed fabric. There is no ivory printed satin fabric! So I compromised and used solid ivory satin from Joann's.

I love the drape of the fabric but it's a beast to sew with. I don't know if all satin is like this but it frays like crazy and is super slippery. Then it gets really static-y and when you use steam to iron it, it just wrinkles more. Man why do I like it again? Oh ya, it drapes well. haha

The neckline looks wavy but it doesn't look like that in real life, I'm not sure why but it's driving me crazy.

The pattern is Vogue V8577. I left out the skirt pocket, back yoke, and cummerband. I also added cuffed sleeves and used fabric-covered buttons. Then both the skirt and bodice are lined with white lining because the fabric is very see-through.

The buttons in the front stop mid-thigh to create a front slit, similar to the inspiration dress. However, I may add one more button because it's a bit too revealing for me. ha but I am bummed you can't see the slit at all, because without it, the dress seems to have a 60's house wife vibe and I'm not necessarily loving that.

I like it! It's super comfy and the fabric is super soft, which always makes a dress 10x better. If I made it again, I'd shorten the sleeves a bit, and add pockets. Not the original pockets on the pattern but just simple side pockets. Then I'd probably also have to make it a different color because I have lots of white dresses at this point. haha but I love them so I probably won't promise that part.

This is the project I've been working on lately and I'm super excited so I wanted to share the inspiration board. It's mainly based off the top right dress, an H&M dress I fell in love with. This is my first time working with lace applique so we'll see how that works out.

What are you working on right now? Or for non-sewers, what was the last thing you were excited about?

Sewn : Black Knit Shirt

Hi everyone! It's been a while. I made a shirt that I thought I'd blog about. I wish I was coming back with something more exciting, but it's going to be a while before I take pictures of anything because it's cold outside and I'm a wuss. haha, so this will do for now.

It's actually the same exact shirt I made for my sister Sadie a while back (posted here), just without the collar. I used Simplicity 6721, and added length and a back zipper.

 photo IMG_5376_zpsbtzwfhcv.jpg
It's a really lightweight knit so it doesn't hold up the heavy metal zipper well, I should have thought that through better. It works ok, but the neckline looks wavy because of the darn zipper. So that's basically driving me crazy.

I do like it. Truthfully I haven't worn it much but I feel like if I give it some time, I'll forget about the flaws and be more comfortable wearing it. haha

I hope everyone's doing well! What have you been up to this past year? What is the best thing going on in your life and something that could be going better?  And yes, I'm talking to you. Whenever I read blogs, I always assume they're talking to other people but if you're reading this then I'm talking to you. :)
